Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are also known as Global Goals. In 2015, these 17 goals were established by all the United Nations State Members. The aim of these goals is to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity to people around the globe by 2030.The UN's Development Programme agency helps other countries achieve those goals (UNDP, n.d.). 

According to the UNDP (n.d.) website, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are : 


 Goal 1: No Poverty

Aims to end poverty everywhere in all its forms around the globe (DESA, n.d.). 


Goal 2: Zero Hunger

Aims to end world hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture (DESA, n.d.)  .

 

Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being

  (Untied Nations, n.d.)

Aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being(DESA, n.d.) . 

Goal 4: Quality Education

  (Untied Nations, n.d.)

Aims to ensure inclusive and equal quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all (DESA, n.d.) .


Goal 5: Gender Equality

Aims to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls (DESA, n.d.) . 


Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

Aims to ensure availability and sustainability management of water for all.  


Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

Aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all(DESA, n.d.) . 

 

Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all(DESA, n.d.) . 


Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation(DESA, n.d.) . 

 

Goal 10: Reduced Inequality

Aims to reduce inequality within and among countries(DESA, n.d.) . 


Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Aims to make to cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable(DESA, n.d.) .  

 

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

  (Untied Nations, n.d.)

Aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns(DESA, n.d.) . 


Goal 13: Climate Action

Aims to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact (DESA, n.d.).


Goal 14: Life Below Water

Aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development (DESA, n.d.). 

  

Goal 15: Life on Land

  (Untied Nations, n.d.)

Aims to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss (DESA, n.d.).   


Goal 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions

Aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels (DESA, n.d.). 

  

Goal 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal

Aims to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development (DESA, n.d.).
